Benno Merkle

Benno Merkle (born July 15, 1872 in Kellmünz an der Iller , † July 30, 1959 in Graefelfing near Munich ) was a German SPD politician and mayor of the city of Schweinfurt from 1920 to 1933 .

Career

Merkle joined the SPD in 1917. Through his work for Prime Minister Kurt Eisner in the state capital Munich, he became known nationwide. On March 14, 1920, he was elected First Mayor of the city of Schweinfurt and in March 1933, at the instigation of the National Socialists, he was arrested and removed from office. During his active time for the city of Schweinfurt, many social projects were implemented, partly with the support of local industrialists.
