history
Keith A. Bentley and his brother Barry J. Bentley founded Bentley Systems in 1984. They launched the commercial version of PseudoStation in 1985, which encouraged users of Intergraph's IGDS (Interactive Graphics Design System) to use inexpensive graphics terminals to view and editing the designs made possible. Previously, access to such designs was only possible through special workstations in connection with VAX computer systems.
The success of PseudoStation convinced them that the market was ready for a stand-alone PC-based CAD system. Tests showed that the IBM AT Personal Computer with Intel's 80286 processor available at the time had sufficient computing power, hard drive speed and graphics capabilities for this task. MicroStation Version 1 was released in 1986 , with which users could load files from the VAX system directly onto the PC and display and plot them there.
software
Bentley's main software is MicroStation , a 2D / 3D CAD platform. The Bentley Software Division and third-party providers use this platform to create special applications. GeoGraphics , for example, is an extension of the MicroStation to include geographic and spatial applications from Bentley's Geospatial . Bentley often buys other companies whose products complement Bentley products. B. in July 2004 the company Haestad Methods to add tools for water / wastewater modeling and simulation to the Geospatial software. Bentley develops its products as BIM (Building Information Modeling) solutions for architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. This technology allows precise control over the entire planning and construction process up to billing and maintenance and is therefore increasingly used in CAAD .
Bentley also sells a solution for document control and project management called ProjectWise . With GenerativeComponents Bentley provides a program for parametric modeling especially for architects and engineers in building design. Bentley Geospatial is mainly represented in the Netherlands by the former ISIS Benelux BV .
