The Beretta M951 , (also known as the Beretta M1951 ), was a self-loading pistol developed for the Italian armed forces .
History and technology
During the Second World War the pistols wielded by the Italian troops fired a different ammunition than their submachine guns. It was only after the war that the Beretta company began developing a military pistol in the uniform 9 mm Parabellum caliber to remedy this problem. The stronger cartridge forced a lock that was not necessary on the original Beretta M1934 , which used weaker ammunition. The new handgun was officially incorporated into the military's equipment in 1951. The first examples had a handle made of a light metal alloy in order to reduce the overall weight. The weapon was too worn out, however, and steel was used again. This measure also reduced the recoil.
The M951 has the slide with an exposed barrel, which is typical of that company's pistols , and the locking mechanism is similar to that of the Walther P38 . There is no cocking trigger as with the Walther, the trigger only works according to the single action principle. In addition, the magazine capacity with 8 cartridges for a post-war weapon is quite small. The internationally successful successor series Beretta 92 to Beretta 96 was developed on the basis of this weapon from 1972 .
