The Lech – Oberlech mountain railway is an aerial cableway ( aerial cableway ) in Lech in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg .

The cable car connects the valley station at 1,434  m above sea level. A. in the middle of the village with the mountain station at 1650  m above sea level. A. The facility is owned by Bergbahn Lech-Oberlech GmbH & Co KG. The cable car between Lech and Oberlech is not just a winter sports cable car, but also a means of public transport , as it connects the two districts in winter for the public alone.

history

The first cable car between Lech and Oberlech was built in 1947 according to the plans of the cable car designer Karl Peter . The first tests for a fully automatic cable car without operating personnel were also carried out in practice with this system, after Karl Peter had previously set up a demonstration and test system in Batschuns . The first cable car system with small cabins was able to transport four people per cabin.

The first major renovation took place in 1959, when cabins with a capacity of 25 people were installed (480 people per hour).

In 1978 cabins with a capacity of up to 28 people were installed. In 1995, various improvements in comfort were made (replacement of the central lane entry by a sliding lane entry, two cabins suitable for night operation, renewal of the electrical engineering, connection to the Oberlech tunnel system).

In 2007 the forecourt of the valley station was roofed over with a glass and steel construction and the exit areas were redesigned.

From April 2016 to December 2016, the runway was largely renewed. The new aerial tramway with two supports runs on the same route as the old system. The entire railway technology, the supports, ropes and cabins were renewed and the mountain and valley stations were rebuilt. The cable car system was supplied by Ludwig Steurer from Doren. The cost of the renovation was around 15 million euros (of which cable car technology around 5.5 million). The transport capacity has been increased to 80 people / cabin (from 514 to 1235 p / h).

Technical specifications

After many years of discussion and preparation, the Lech – Oberlech mountain railway was completely renewed in a very short time in 2016. For years, the transport capacity has been considered insufficient to meet the number of passengers. By converting the system, the total capacity of the system's conveying capacity has been increased by almost two thirds compared to the previous one.

Technical data of the new system

The system of the aerial tramway was also retained on the new lift. Technical specifications:

  • Cable height in the valley station: 1434 m
  • Cable height in the mountain station: 1650 m
  • Difference in altitude: 215 m
  • Operating length (horizontal length): 816 m
  • Operating length ( inclined length ): 845 m
  • Rope manufacturer: Fatzer

Oberlecher tunnel system

Oberlech is closed to car traffic from December to April each year and is only connected to the center of Lech via the Lech – Oberlech cable car. Most holiday guests arrive by car and have to park it in one of the 800 underground parking spaces. The guests and their luggage are transported by cable car to Oberlech.

The Oberlech tunnel system cost around seven million euros and is based on the vision of hotelier Fridolin Lucian and his son Gerhard. The tunnel system was developed as a concept for gentle tourism and opened in 1996. Until 1995, these shipments were of 26 skidoo and snow groomers handled. The hotels and inns in Oberlech are connected underground by the two-kilometer tunnel system. Since then, all of the delivery and delivery has been handled via the tunnel system. The last stage of expansion was the construction of a 300 meter long tunnel from the mountain station of the Lech – Oberlech mountain railway to the Hotel Sonneburg and a branching 100 meter long line to the east to Landhaus Sonnenburg and Chalet Montana in summer 2007.
