Under Berger des Pyrénées , Pyrenean Shepherd Dog , the FCI has two dog breeds from the French part of the Pyrenees ( FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 141 and 138 ).
Origin and history
The Pyrenean Sheepdogs are breeds that have been shaped over centuries by the mountainous landscape of the French Pyrenees and their original purpose - the independent herding of flocks of sheep. The breeding animals were selected solely for their ability to work. This is how dogs were created that are adapted to work in the high mountains, with a high degree of intelligence and self-confidence, with a lot of courage and even more energy. A breed standard was only defined for the Berger des Pyrénées in the 1920s . The first Pyrenean herding dogs came to Germany in the mid-1970s.
description
There are two breeds of the Pyrenean Sheepdog. The smooth-haired Berger des Pyrénées is Face Rase ( French . With a shaved face ) called; The other race is A Poil Long ( French . with long hair ) or Museau Normal ( French . normal snout ). In many of these long-haired dogs, villi form due to the thick undercoat in the fur, which serve as weather protection for the dog in the high mountains and are known as "cadenettes". The Face Rase is short-haired on the face and also has slightly less long fur on the body. The two breeds have only been viewed as separate breeds for a few years and have been bred separately. While the Langhaar-Berger is common worldwide, the Face Rase breed is still very little known.
The body size is between 40 and 46 cm for the long-haired bitches and 42 to 48 cm for the long-haired males. A tolerance of + or - 2 cm is allowed in perfectly typical dogs. The Face Rase can grow from 40 to 52 cm (females) and 54 cm (males).
The head of the Pyrenean Sheepdog is almost triangular, with a short muzzle and a broad skull. The fur on the face should lie "in the gust of wind", leave the eyes free so that the dog has a good view.
The Berger des Pyrénées comes in many different colors from blonde to various shades of brown and gray to black and also as a harlequin. The nose mirror should always be black and the eyes as dark as possible. The hindquarters are clearly angled and allow the dogs their extraordinary jumping ability.
Essence
The Berger des Pyrénées is a dog that has a maximum of energy with a minimum of size and weight. He can be cautious and suspicious of strangers, of course socialization and upbringing play a very important role. He loves his own family and close friends of the family devotedly.
The attachment to his people makes the Berger des Pyrénées unsuitable for a pure kennel; he wants to be there always and everywhere. He is always on the lookout for opportunities to "help" his people - important for a working dog that should be quite independent in its original field of activity. Employment opportunities include agility , obedience and herding work. The upbringing and training should be absolutely consistent, but loving and friendly.
Piémont
A largely unknown special form of the smooth-haired salvor is the Piémont. This stroke is common in the lowlands of the Pyrenees ( Italian : Piedmont: foot of the mountains). He also has short straight hair on his body. This breed variant was almost extinct and is currently being re-established through breeding.
