The Bergkeller portal in Neustadt is a listed building in Detmold in the Lippe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

Until the early 19th century it was common in Lippe to consume the beer immediately after brewing; there were no options for long-term storage. In order to ensure sufficient cooling during the fermentation process, deep ice cellars and tunnels were dug in which ice could be stored all year round.

Before the privatization of the brewing industry in the late 19th century, it was under the control of guilds and the state government. The builder Ferdinand Wilhelm Brune built the mountain cellar under the Büchenberg in 1836 for the Princely Lippische Braueramt . The tunnel is lined with quarry stones like a barrel vault, the end is a classical portal with Doric pilasters. The inscription "CEREVISIÆ MDCCCXXXVI" ("Dem Bier 1836") is written above the gate, and the beam above is decorated with an acanthus frieze.

Nowadays, the cellar of the University of Music serves as a warehouse and is assigned to the Palaisgarten because of its proximity .
