Mountain shoe (also mountain boot ) is a shoe for mountain climbing .

description

The mountaineering shoe is a special shoe for alpine use such as mountaineering, for high-altitude tours or for moving in unpaved terrain, steep slopes, rocks, scree , ice and snow. It is characterized by high sole stiffness, waterproofness, non-slip profile and robustness. The shaft of mountain boots extends over the ankle, it is firmer and heavier than hiking boots . Trekking boots, on the other hand, have a softer sole and correspondingly better cushioning.

The stiff sole also proves itself when carrying heavy luggage and is a requirement when wearing crampons , as they otherwise slip off your shoes. Pure high mountain boots do not have any significant twisting of the sole, which is useful in high mountains, but hinders on ascent and descent or when hiking, as the shoe does not roll off and its walking behavior is reminiscent of a ski boot.

Crampon suitability

An important differentiation is the suitability for wearing crampons . That is why a distinction is made between mountain boots not, limited and (fully) crampon-compatible.

• Shoes that are not suitable for crampons are not suitable for wearing crampons.
• Shoes that are partially compatible with crampons make it possible to wear lightweight crampons and with straps.
• Fully crampon-compatible shoes mostly have holding points firmly attached to the shoe for lever bindings, comparable to ski bindings . This type of shoe also includes the high-alpine shell shoe , which - similar to a ski shoe commonly used today - has a hard shell outer shoe. Most touring ski boots with a very similar design are also fully crampon-compatible.
