The Historical Society of Bamberg was founded on July 8, 1830 at the suggestion of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. It is one of the oldest German history societies and one of the oldest societies in Bamberg .

history

The founding meeting took place in the rectory of the upper parish . The original intention to create a history association for the area of the entire Obermain district at that time could not be realized, as the "Association for Bayreuth History and Antiquity" (today the Historical Association for Upper Franconia ) had been founded in Bayreuth as early as 1827 . However, a fruitful collaboration was agreed that continues to the present day.

In the first decades of the association's activities, numerous objects from secularization assets were acquired for the association's collections and thus preserved for posterity as historical evidence of the history of the former bishopric.

Long-term chairmen were the future Archbishop of Bamberg Michael von Deinlein (1851-1856), Otto Meyer (1952-1960, then honorary chairman) and Gerd Zimmermann (1977-1997, then honorary chairman until his death in 2013).

Act

The aim is to give the population of Bamberg and the former bishopric a diverse approach to history and the past. The association's extensive collections, lectures, guided tours, study trips and a prehistoric working group serve this purpose. On the other hand, the scientific processing of history is an essential task. The cooperation with the university is traditionally strong. In addition, the association is also involved in issues relating to the protection of monuments in the world heritage city of Bamberg.

Publications

In addition to the journal Reports for the Publication of Smaller Scientific Studies (most recently Volume 153, 2017), the association also publishes a series of supplements , which currently (as of 2009) comprises 44 titles, including
