Gerd Zimmermann (historian)

Gerd Zimmermann (born November 9, 1924 in Morchenstern in Northern Bohemia; † August 5, 2013 in Bamberg ) was a German historian and professor emeritus at the University of Bamberg .

life and work

After graduating from high school in Büsum in 1946, Zimmermann studied German, history and geography at the University of Würzburg from 1946 to 1951. After receiving his doctorate in 1951 with Otto Meyer , he worked from 1952 to 1954 at the Historical Institute of Philology - Theol. Bamberg University, from 1960 to 1964 research assistant at the historical seminar in Würzburg. In 1961 he became a private lecturer , in 1964 a university professor , in 1967 he was given the title of adjunct professor , and in 1970 he was appointed scientific councilor and professor. In 1975 he took over the chair of history at the Bamberg University of Applied Sciences, and as managing dean he played a key role in establishing the history and geosciences faculty. In 1993 he retired.

His dissertation, the choice of patronage and the change of piety in the Middle Ages , already showed the connection between church history and regional history, which was to become characteristic of many of his works. This includes investigations into monastic foundations such as Theres Monastery and, above all, research into Ebrach Monastery . The Cistercians , but not only them, are also entitled to the habilitation thesis on the cura corporis in the order regulations of the occidental High Middle Ages, which combines analysis and source presentation. Since 1981 he has been a member of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem , since 1985 Knight of the Order of Gregory , since 1989 holder of the Federal Cross of Merit 2nd Class on ribbon. The Bavarian Benedictine Academy , he also belonged to. Since 1997 he has been honorary chairman of the Bamberg Historical Society .

Gerd Zimmermann is the father of the ancient historian Klaus Zimmermann .
