The Berkeley Sound ( French Baye Accaron , Spanish Bahía de la Anunciación ) is a fjord-like bay in the northeast of the Falkland Islands . In the approximately 30 km long and maximum 11.5 km wide bay there are several small islands such as Hog Island , Long Island or the protected area Kidney Island .
The barren landscape, formed by ice ages , was settled in the middle of the 18th century by French colonists who founded the settlement of Port Louis here . In 1834 Charles Darwin described Berkley Sound as part of an expedition with the HMS Beagle as a hilly stretch of land that appears poor and desolate.
Today there are several small settlements such as Green Patch , Johnson's Harbor or Port Louis on the coast of the bay . The bay is an important transshipment point for the local fish processing companies.
