Rockey P. Earhart

Rockey Preston Earhart (born June 23, 1837 in Franklin County , Ohio , † May 12, 1892 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American businessman and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Earhart's childhood was overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the Mexican-American War in the following years . He came to Oregon in 1855 with the 4th  Infantry Regiment of the US Army . For several years he served as quartermaster in the Army Ministry. Then he did business in Yamhill County and Polk County . From 1861 to 1868 he was an Indian agent in Warm Springs in Jefferson County (Oregon). This time was overshadowed by the civil war. He then went to business in Salem (Oregon) until 1872 . During that time he was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1870 . He served in the Portland Bulletin office from 1872 to 1874, and served as chief clerk in the Surveyor General's office from 1874 to 1878 . He was elected Secretary of State of Oregon in the 1878 election and re-elected in 1882. He held the post from September 2, 1878 to January 10, 1887. He also worked from 1885 to 1887 as Adjutant General. In the 1888 election, he was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives for Multnomah County . He was later named Collector of Customs for the Port of Portland .

He was one of the most prominent Freemasons on the Pacific coast .
