Howell Redus Appling junior (born September 5, 1919 in Carthage , Texas , † October 16, 2002 in Multnomah County , Oregon ) was an American officer , businessman and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of Oregon from 1959 to 1965 .

Career

Nothing is known about Howell Redus Appling junior's youth. He graduated from Rice University with an engineering degree . During the Second World War , he joined the US Navy in 1941 . He achieved the rank of lieutenant. After retiring from the military, he founded Independent Distributors in 1946 , a logging and equipment wholesaler in Portland, Oregon. Appling served as party leader in Multnomah County during the successful candidacy of Oregon Secretary of State Mark Hatfield in 1958 for governor of Oregon. Hatfield then named him after his election as the new Secretary of State of Oregon. In the 1960 election, Appling was elected Secretary of State for a full term. He defeated the Democrat Monroe Sweetland. But he refused to be re-elected in 1964. The Republican Tom McCall succeeded him. Appling participated as a delegate at the Republican National Conventions in 1960, 1964 and 1968 . He presided over the Oregon presidential campaigns for Barry Goldwater in 1964 and Richard Nixon in 1968. He was also a Portland businessman until his death in 2002. He was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Carthage, Texas.
