Earl T. Newbry

Earl T. Newbry (born April 15, 1900 in Rocky Ford , Colorado , † September 2, 1995 in Ashland , Oregon ) was an American businessman and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Earl T. Newbry was born and raised in Colorado. Nothing is known about his youth. The Newbry family moved to Oregon in the early 1920s and settled in Ashland, Jackson County . Newbry managed a fruit growing and packaging company in the Rogue River Valley before going into politics.

In 1938 he ran successfully in the 19th District (Jackson County) for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives . He attended the sessions from 1939 to 1941. In 1942 he was elected to the Oregon Senate for the 6th Senate District . He attended the 1943, 1945, and 1947 sessions.

On October 28, 1947, Oregon Governor Earl Snell , Secretary of State of Oregon Robert S. Farrell Jr., and Senate President Marshall Cornell were on their way on a hunting expedition in southern Oregon in a plane crash near Dog Lake in the Lake County (Oregon) died. Since the first two successors of the Governor of Oregon died with him, the Speaker of the House John Hubert Hall was appointed the new Governor of Oregon. Hall's first act was to appoint Newbry as the new Secretary of State of Oregon.

During his tenure, Newbry was responsible for establishing branches of the Department of Motor Vehicles across the state and for enforcing permanent license plates in the state. He was elected Secretary of State of Oregon for a full term in 1948 and re-elected in 1952. In his third candidacy in 1956 he suffered a defeat against the Democrat Edith Green . Newbry held the post until January 7, 1957.

After the end of his tenure, he returned to southern Oregon and was back in business.
