The Berliner Büchertisch is a joint project founded in 2004 as a cooperative and non-profit association in Neukölln and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg . The book table accepts books and other media and distributes them to school libraries , social institutions and people in need in Berlin and Brandenburg; in addition, donated books are sold cheaply in our own shops.

aims

The main goal of the project is to enable access to books regardless of income. In addition, in addition to promoting reading, a working atmosphere should be created that enables them to support and strengthen each other in developing professional prospects.

history

It was founded in 2004 on the initiative of Ana Lichtwer. In 2005 the branch opened on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg, in 2011 the branch in Gneisenaustraße . In 2013, employed and voluntary employees of the book table founded a cooperative that exists alongside the association. In 2014 the branch opened on Wühlischstrasse in Friedrichshain, the establishment of which was financed through crowdfunding . In 2017, the book table's rooms on Mehringdamm were terminated, whereupon the shop on Mehringdamm had to close. After a long search, the project moved to Neukölln-Rixdorf.

The project lives from book donations, mostly from private households, and from donations from various publishers. Book donations and donations of board games, CDs, DVDs and LPs can be handed in at the book collection point in Neukölln-Rixdorf. Larger volumes of books can be picked up within Berlin by appointment. The donated books are collected and sorted. Most of the books are available free of charge from Berlin institutions such as school libraries, children's facilities, prison libraries , etc. a. passed on or displayed at gift cards. The other part is sold in two own shops at low prices as well as in the online shop. Children are always given a book of their choice in the shops. The proceeds from the books sold are used to cover operating costs and the implementation of projects.

Projects

Reading promotion
The Berlin Book Table is committed to promoting reading in Berlin and Brandenburg. To this end, projects such as the “Berlin Reading Troll”, which includes the distribution of reading cases to Berlin schools, and the “A Heart for School Libraries” campaign have been launched. Close cooperation with schools, school libraries and other children's institutions enables direct reading promotion for children in Berlin and Brandenburg. The “Berliner Lesetaube” project annually awards reading grants to children from socially disadvantaged families.

Events
Until 2017, the Kreuzberg literary workshop took place on the premises of the association every month. Readings and events on the subject of social commitment and sustainability were also offered.
The Berliner Büchertisch is a cooperation partner of the language week, the intercultural event weeks Interkreuzhain, the long book night and the like. a.

Stores

The shop in Kreuzberg (Gneisenaustr. 7a) and the flea market shop in Neukölln (Richardstr. 83) are part of the book table cooperative. Books are sold cheaply here.
