Expireware

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Expireware (English to expire = "expire, run out", German for " software with an expiry date") describes software that is usually released to interested parties free of charge. On the one hand, the program has the full scope of functions provided as in the retail versions, but stops its service either after a certain period of time (for example after 30 days) or on a specified date.

Expireware is intended to enable potential buyers of software to fully test the program for a limited time. On the manufacturer side, it is hoped that this will result in a greater willingness to buy after the test period has expired, since, in contrast to crippleware , which cuts the functionality, the usability for productive use is better recognizable for the user. There is also a combination of Expireware and Crippleware: For example, a test version of Microsoft Office 2010 could only be used for reading documents after the test phase had expired, but not for editing.
