The Mikoyan-Gurewitsch I-222 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич И-222 ) is a single-seat Soviet fighter aircraft from the Second World War . It was one of a series of experimental designs with which the OKB Mikoyan-Gurewitsch wanted to develop a successor to the MiG-3 . Only a prototype was created .

history

Development work began in early 1944 under the project name 3A . The I-222 was supposed to operate at great heights and was therefore the first aircraft to have a pressurized cabin from Mikoyan-Gurevich . In contrast to its predecessor I-221 , more powerful SchWAK machine cannons were installed instead of the machine guns used . The more powerful AM-39B-1 engine powered a four-bladed AW-9L-26 propeller. The wings in a low wing arrangement were taken over from the I-221.
The first flight took place on May 7, 1944. In the course of the flight tests, the I-222 rose to an altitude of 14,500 m, which is a record for Soviet piston-engine aircraft. It was planned to transfer the model into series production as the MiG-7 . However, since the advance of the Red Army no longer needed a defense fighter for cities and industrial plants in the hinterland, project 3A was finally discontinued. The successor model was the I-224 , which was also not produced in series .
