The Mikoyan-Gurewitsch I-230 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич И-230 ) was a single-engine fighter aircraft of the Second World War . It was developed as a further development of the MiG-3 , but was not transferred to series production.
The I-230 was also referred to as the MiG-3D by the test pilots , probably because of its project name and its close relationship to the MiG-3. This designation was later adopted, although official bodies never named the aircraft that way.
development
Development work on this type began after the first combat experience with the MiG-3. The machine, also known as Project D , had an aerodynamically better design than its predecessor; the oil cooler had been relocated to the inside of the fuselage and the pilot received a more spacious cabin and better visibility through a modified cockpit. The high-altitude Mikulin AM-35A was intended as the motor, but since this was ultimately not produced, an AM-38F had to be converted accordingly.
The flight tests were carried out in the summer of 1942 by I. I. Kalinin and showed that the I-230 had only slightly better performance data than the MiG-3, especially in terms of top speed and climbing power. Since there was also no particular need for fighter planes for greater heights, the decision was made against series production. In spite of this, some pre-series machines were built that the 12th Fighter Squadron tried out in the war near Moscow.
In 1943 a slightly improved version called I-231 , Project 2D or MiG-3DD appeared with an AM-39 engine and a horizontal stabilizer that was lower than the I-310. It was tested by J. A. Antipow, but did not reach series production either.
