The Soviet fighter aircraft Mikoyan-Gurewitsch I-211 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич И-211 , also: Project Je ) was a further development of the MiG-3 and should replace it. Despite good performance, however, it did not go into large-scale production in favor of the Lavochkin La-5 .

development

The first construction work for the I-211 project took place in 1941. One cell of the MiG-3 was equipped with the radial engine M-82 (later renamed ASch-82 ) and tested by the pilots I. G. Lasarew and W. I. Golofastov at the end of the same year. Three 12.7 mm MG UBS were used as armament . This machine, known as the I-210 or the MiG-9 M-82 , did not provide any particular increase in performance compared to its predecessor, so the design was revised again.

The tail unit was enlarged and the aircraft was aerodynamically refined by placing the cooler inside the aircraft. The fuselage cross-section had been better adapted to the engine and enlarged.

In the summer of 1942, test pilot W. M. Sawkin began flight tests. In the further course of the test it turned out that the I-211 with its climbing performance and top speed was the best that the Soviet aircraft industry had to offer at the time. In these properties it even surpassed the high-performance parallel designs La-5 and Jak-9, newly developed at that time .

It was decided to build a pilot series of ten machines and test them at the front. The I-211 were used in the Kalininer section and received consistently positive reviews. However, since the new La-5 and Jak-9 models were already being built in large quantities and the introduction of the I-211 into production would have meant an unacceptable loss of time at this point in the war, the model ultimately did not go into series production.
