The Mikoyan-Gurewitsch I-224 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич И-224 ) was a single-seat Soviet fighter aircraft for the stratospheric area . It was created during the Second World War and only existed in one copy.

development

The development of the low-wing aircraft in a wood-metal composite construction began in 1943 as one of the aircraft types that were to replace the MiG-3 . The project name was 4A . An AM-42FB engine with two TK-300B compressors and an AW-9L-26 propeller with a diameter of 3.50 m served as drive . As armament, two SchWAK cannons caliber 20 mm were mounted in the bow on both sides below the engine. Like the I-222 , OKB Mikojan-Gurewitsch had equipped the I-224 with a pressurized cabin .

The first flight was carried out on October 20, 1944 by Igor Schelest. The I-224 achieved good rates of climb and they were also satisfied with the horizontal flight characteristics. In the event of a possible series production, the aircraft was to be given the designation MiG-7 , later an agreement was reached on the MiG-11 .

But then the I-224 crashed during a test flight, the pilot Alexej Jakimow was able to jump off with the parachute. Irregular operation of the compressor at certain speeds had already been noticed beforehand. The cause of the accident was finally recognized as a burst of the compressor with the subsequent destruction of the engine. Due to the crash, the tests with the I-224 were canceled, especially since the successor model I-225 was already available for testing.
