Mikojan-Gurewitsch DIS ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич ДИС ) is the name for a Soviet twin-engine fighter project from the early 1940s. After two prototypes had been built, work on this model was discontinued in favor of the Pe-3bis .
development
The design goal of this type was to create a long-range escort fighter for the Soviet bomber units, the designation DIS (Dwuchmotorni Istrebitel Soprowoschdenija, twin-engine escort fighter) indicates this purpose. The competition model was the TIS from Polikarpow , which, however, also did not go into series production.
The first model was completed in May 1941, and in summer it began flight tests with two Mikulin AM-37 engines. In order to make the area of application as versatile as possible, it was planned to carry bombs on the hull and cameras in the bow. A second prototype was built in 1942 and was powered by two Schwezow ASch 82F engines. In the case of series production, the machine should receive the troop designation MiG-5 . However, the tests had to be stopped when the design office was relocated behind the Urals due to the advance of the German troops.
A modified version is said to have been built in 1945, the development of which, however, was not pursued further due to the presence of powerful fighter planes.
technical description
The DIS was a self - supporting low- wing aircraft in a mixed wood / metal construction with an oval fuselage cross-section. The wings had a V-shaped kink and a wedge-shaped plan. The vertical stabilizer consisted of two end plates that were attached to the cantilevered horizontal stabilizer. The main landing gear could be retracted into the engine nacelles, the tail wheel into the fuselage.
