The Mikojan-Gurewitsch I-221 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич И-221 ) was the prototype of a single-seat fighter for the stratospheric area from the time of the Second World War . The project name was 2A , the possible series name was MiG-7 . The development work was carried out by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design team . It is a single-engine, single - seat low - wing aircraft with a tail wheel retractable undercarriage in mixed construction.

development

The high-altitude fighter MiG-3 from 1940 , built in 3322 copies, served as the initial model. In 1943, development work began on the type that was to be used against the Junkers Ju 388 K and L reconnaissance aircraft that were being developed. On December 2, 1943, the first flight was carried out by Pyotr Shuravlyov.

The I-221 had trapezoidal wings with an area that was five square meters larger than the MiG-3. The V12 engine of the Mikulin AM-39 A type had a compressor used for the first time by OKB Mikoyan-Gurewitsch. Due to the heavy engine had the intended armament shvak cannon - machine guns by machine guns of the types SchKAS and UBS are replaced.

The flight tests revealed some shortcomings, such as poor visibility for the pilot and poor armament. The lack of the pressurized cabin impaired the effectiveness of the I-221. Finally, the prototype was destroyed during a test flight after the engine failed. Project 2A was finally abandoned and the points of criticism in the successor models I-222 (Project 3A) and I-224 (Project 4A) were eliminated.
