The Mikoyan-Gurevich I-340 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич И-340 ) is an experimental fighter aircraft of the Soviet design office Mikoyan-Gurevich . It represents the link between the series-produced types MiG-17 and MiG-19 .
development
It was very similar in appearance to the MiG-17, but could be distinguished from the MiG-19 by the rear fuselage section, which was already similar to the MiG-19. The cell and the middle-deck structure were made of metal. The wings were swept by 42 ° at the leading edge and 45 ° at the rear.
The engine designer Alexander Mikulin had developed a turbine that, in contrast to the WK-1F engine conventionally used in the MiG-17, had been reduced in weight to such an extent that two copies weighed only 88 kg more than a single WK-1F. In addition, he was able to reduce the diameter. For this reason it was possible to equip a production MiG-17 with two of these drives, known as AM-5A .
This aircraft was given the designation I-340 or SM-1 , which stands for modified swept wing fighter. A second machine got two slightly improved AM-5F turbines and the designations I-360 or SM-2 . The AM-5F was then also the drive that was used as the AM-9 or RD-9 in the first MiG-19 series and also in the Jak-25 .
The testing of the two test models began at the end of 1951 and yielded new knowledge about the flight behavior of twin-engine supersonic aircraft with swept wings, which were taken into account in the development of the MiG-19.
