Mikoyan-Gurevich SM-50

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mikojan-Gurewitsch SM-50 ( Russian Микоян-Гуревич СМ-50 ) was a Soviet interceptor aircraft that was created in 1959 by converting a serial MiG-19S . It was an attempt to increase the altitude and climb performance of the MiG-19 by installing a rocket engine in a large tub under the entire fuselage, in order to be able to intercept targets approaching very high or very quickly. Ultimately, this design was viewed as too complex for military use, especially since anti-aircraft missiles increasingly proved their suitability for combating such targets .
