The Petlyakov Pe-3 ( Russian Петляков Пе-3 ) was a heavy Soviet high-altitude fighter from World War II . It was developed by the Soviet aircraft designer Vladimir Petlyakov .
development
The project planning work on the Samoljot 100 ( German "airplane 100") began in 1938 after a tender by the Soviet government for a twin-engine high altitude fighter. The flight tests began on December 22, 1939 with Pyotr Stefanowski under the designation WI-100 ("Wysotny Istrebitel" - high altitude fighter). Before it was finished, the decision was made to convert the model into a dive bomber . The result was the Petlyakov Pe-2 , which was built in very large numbers .
Nevertheless, 23 aircraft designed as fighter were built under the designation Pe-3 , which were more heavily armed and, in contrast to the conventional Pe-2, had no dive brakes and no bomb bay. These machines proved themselves quite well and so a second series of 200 fighters called the Pe-3bis was launched and integrated into the Moscow air defense from autumn 1941 . In addition to the cannon armament, eight RS-82 rockets and 300 kg bombs could be carried under the wings . A year later, the remaining Pe-3s were given to the sea pilots, who used them to protect the lend-lease convoys in the Arctic Ocean.
Since the demand for high-altitude fighter aircraft was not particularly great and was adequately covered by the existing Pe-3 / Pe-3bis together with the MiG -3, various other operational versions of the Pe-3 were produced.
So in 1942 the reconnaissance variant Pe-3R , developed from the Pe-3bis, appeared , which was used in large quantities. The dive bomber Pe-3I and the high altitude fighter Pe-3WI with a pressurized cabin were also created.
Like most twin-engine fighters, the aircraft did not prove itself in its original role, but it was not used at all because the expected missions of German high-altitude bombers did not materialize. The plane was too heavy in combat with single-engine fighters. However, the Pe-3 proved itself as a long-range fighter in the fight against German maritime patrols like the Fw 200 .
A total of 1300 copies were built.
