The Estadio Latinoamericano ( Spanish for Latin American Stadium ) is a baseball stadium in the Cuban capital Havana . It was opened in 1946 under the name Estadio del Cerro and initially held 31,000 spectators. In 1971 the capacity was expanded to 55,000 places.
Baseball games of the Pan American Games in 1991 were also played in the Estadio Latinoamericano as was a friendly game in 1999 between the Cuban national baseball team and the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball MLB from the USA . In 2006, the American qualification for the baseball tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held in this stadium . Cuba and the United States qualified here .
In addition to sporting events, the stadium is also used for major political events.
The Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame is also located in the stadium.
