The Bermondsey Square is a place at the Tower Bridge Road in Bermondsey , a part of the London Borough of Southwark in south London , England . Bermondsey Square was originally the site of the 11th century Bermondsey Abbey .

Archaeological excavations were carried out by the English Heritage in 2005/2006 . The earliest medieval finds were a Norman church from around 1080, which is already mentioned in the Domesday Book . The area had seen continuous development since then. In April 2009 the Bermondsey Square Hotel opened here.

The Bermondsey Market is an antique market at Bermondsey Square, which takes place every Friday.

The Long Lane leads northwest to Borough High Street . This street originally connected the Abbey to the Church of St George the Martyr on High Street. Bermondsey Street leads west and north , leading to Tooley Street and about ten minutes' walk to London Bridge station.

history

Bermondsey Square was originally known as the Court Yard and represented the square grounds of Bermondsey Abbey. A chapel that was built in 1699 under a Puritan background used to stand here. The chapel was later used as a wool shop before being destroyed. At the entrance to the square between the public building of King John's Head and an oil trade was the Abbey gatehouse, which was demolished in the early 19th century. Between the entrance to the Long Walk and a salt shop stood the Mansion House, which was built from materials from the Abbey.
