Game of Games 2015: Hit games with friends

Bermuda is a cooperative card game by game designer Carlo Emanuele Lanzavecchia . The game for three to six players, ages ten and up, lasts around 15 minutes per round. It's 2015 at HUCH! & friends and was awarded in 2015 at the Austrian game award Spiel der Spiele as a “games hit with friends”.

Theme and equipment

The game is about a group of divers who dive for treasure in the Bermuda Triangle and are threatened by a mermaid as guardian. The players try together to lay out rows of cards within the time they can hold their breath and thus obtain as many treasure cards as possible.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of 92 cards. There is a mermaid map, 28 treasure maps and 63 diving maps.

Style of play

The game runs over five game rounds. The card display is prepared at the beginning of each round. As many treasure cards are laid out as there are players in the game. The mermaid card is placed above it. The diving cards are shuffled and each player receives 12 cards and takes them in hand, in a game with six players each player receives only 10 cards.

All players play together and at the same time. The game round begins with all players taking a deep breath and then holding their breath. The players now place cards underneath the treasure cards until they exactly match the number indicated on the card. The cards lying one below the other must always be one point away from the previously placed card in the row, the one and the nine are also considered to be adjacent. The players are allowed to communicate with each other with hand signals during the display.

As soon as a player breathes, the round ends immediately, after which the dive is evaluated. The players get all treasure maps, among which there is exactly the number of the required diving maps and in the order of which there is no error. Treasure cards that do not contain the exact number of cards required or that contain errors in the sequence are given to the mermaid. Then the cards are laid out for the next round.

The game ends after five rounds, after which the cards are evaluated. The diving group receives one point for each treasure map received, the mermaid receives the number of defense points indicated on the cards. If the number of points of the players exceeds that of the mermaid, they have won the game. You lose if you have fewer points than the mermaid.
