Bermuda Race

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bermuda Race, also known as the Newport Bermuda Race , is an offshore regatta from Brenton Reef near Newport (Rhode Island) to Hamilton on the Bermuda island of Hamilton Island.

The 647 nautical mile race has been held every two years in mid-June since 1906. Most of the time, the participants sail with no land view. They cross the Gulf Stream and usually take between three and six days to complete. The first race in 1906 was the yawl Tamerlane (11 m) skippered by Frank Maier won in a time of 126 hours. The current record of 54 hours was set by the yacht Pyewacket in 2002.

The Onion Patch regatta series is closely linked to the Newport Bermuda Race . This series of races rounds off the ocean race to the Bermuda Islands.

The Onion Patch regatta series consists of three parts:

  • the annual regatta of the New York Yacht Club on the Atlantic Ocean off Newport one weekend before the Newport-Bermuda Race
  • the Newport Bermuda Race itself
  • two races in the great bay (Great Sound) off Hamilton (Bermuda) on Wednesday after the Newport-Bermuda Race

The first Onion Patch was held in 1964, originally a regatta similar to the Admiral's Cup with team yachts. A team consists of three yachts that represent a sailing club . Today there is both an individual and a team classification.
