Bernard Braine, Baron Braine of Wheatley
Bernard Richard Braine, Baron Braine of Wheatley , FRSA , Kt , KStJ , KSG (born June 24, 1914 in London , † June 4, 2000 in Southend-on-Sea ) was a British Conservative Party politician and Life Peer .
Life
Braine was born in the London borough of Ealing , his father worked in the public sector. He received his education at the Hendon County Grammar School in London. After completing this, he began working for the Inland Revenue , the British tax authority at the time. In 1933 he became a member of the Young Conservatives , where he was promoted to national vice chairman until 1937. During World War II he served in the North Staffordshire Regiment in West Africa, Northwestern Europe and Southeast Asia. As a soldier, he ran for the Conservative Party in the general election in 1945 , but had no chance in his constituency. In 1947 his book Tory Democracy was published , in which his political worldview is presented.
He finally made it into parliament in 1950 . Subsequently, he was a member of the House of Commons for 39 years without interruption until his retirement from active politics in 1992, which made him Father of the House , the longest-serving member of parliament, from 1987 . During his time in Parliament he was Parliamentary Secretary for Pensions and Northern Ireland and Health. During his time as a parliamentarian, he was particularly committed to the fight against alcoholism , against abortion , for human rights and against the storage of oil and chemicals on Canvey Island .
In 1992 he was promoted to the status of a Life Peer and has since officially held the title of Baron Braine of Wheatley, of Rayleigh in the County of Essex .
Braine was married to his wife Kathleen from 1935 until their death in 1982 . The couple had three sons.
Honors
- In 1971 Braine became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts .
- In 1972 he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor .
- In 1985 he was appointed Knight of Justice of the Order of Saint John .
- In 1987 he was made a Knight of the Order of Gregory .
- In the same year he was awarded the Greek Order of Honor in the Grand Officer class.
