Bernard Chiarelli (born February 24, 1934 in Valenciennes ) is a former French football player and coach .

In the club

The connector began his career in 1952 at the professional club in his hometown, the US Valenciennes , with which he was promoted to Division 1 in 1956 . In the following two seasons, the northern French club fought successfully against relegation; A title win in the championship or the Coupe de France was out of the question: For Bernard Chiarelli, 14th place meant the best position of his career to date.

His transfer from VA (the common name for the US Valenciennes-Anzin) to the neighbor Racing Lens in the summer of 1958 sparked a heated controversy at his new club: the transfer fee of 25 million old Francs (about 250,000 DM , a high amount at the time ) seemed too high for a player who "was a fine technician, but hardly suited the team's combat-oriented style of play" - and this after only one season, in which it was again only narrowly in 16th place To escape descent, also left again. Chiarelli stayed in the region and played for Lille OSC for the next two years . In 1959/60 the second division reached the cup quarter-finals; the player should never make it further in this competition, and the club did not succeed either.

1961 returned Chiarelli his move to UA Sedan-Torcy in the Division 1 back and played two seasons for once in the top flight with: 1962 and fifth in 1963 as a third in the final standings. He was also in the 1962/63 cup quarter-finals before he joined Le Havre AC , the doyen of French football, at the end of this season . However, this meant the return to the second division - and 12 months later the club even voluntarily relegated to the amateur camp. It is not known whether Chiarelli still followed this path to third division - he was only 30 years old at the time.

In the national team

Bernard Chiarelli played his only senior international match in the French national team against Switzerland in April 1958 . He only slipped into the eleven because the Algerian-born Mekhloufi , Ben Tifour and Zitouni had decided to support the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) against French rule in their home country's struggle for independence . After they had played in an Algerian FLN national team in April 1958, the French Football Association no longer considered them . As a result, Chiarelli was briefly appointed to the 1958 World Cup squad , but not used in the finals in Sweden - he could not dispute their position with the regular side runners Armand Penverne and Jean-Jacques Marcel .

Life after player time

Chiarelli worked as a coach from the mid-1960s, including from 1968 to 1977 at Amicale Lucé FC , which he led to the second division . Further stations could not be determined.
