Bernard I. (Comminges)
Bernard I (* before 1105; † fallen between 1145 and 1150) was Count of Comminges from around 1105 . He was the only son of his predecessor, Count Roger III. and his unknown wife.
During his life, Bernard was in conflict with the Bishop of Couserans about rule over the territory of his diocese of the same name. Bernard had Saint-Lizier burned down around 1120 and took Bishop Pierre I prisoner, and he relocated the city's population to Saint-Girons . After Bernard released the bishop a few years later, the war began again. Bernard was seriously injured in a fight near Saint-Gaudens with the bishop's men. Before he died, he is said to have been attacked with repentance, returned church property stolen from the bishop and compensated the couseran's population for the damage caused.
He was buried in Bonnefont Abbey .
Bernard I took part in 1118 in the crusade of King Alfonso I of Aragon against the Moors in Spain, which was successfully concluded with the conquest of Saragossa (December 8, 1118), Tudela (February 1119) and other cities. He was also present in Spain in 1135 at the coronation of King Alfonso VII of Castile on May 26th in León .
