Bernard Longpré

Bernard Longpré (* 1937 in Montreal ; † June 24, 2002 ibid) was a Canadian animator , film director and painter.

Life

Longpré studied at the Institut des arts graphiques; one of his teachers was Albert Dumouchel . In 1957 René Jodoin brought him to the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), where he initially worked as an animator on documentaries and educational films for the Ministry of Defense . His early work as an animator includes An Introduction to Jet Engines (1959) and Bandwith (1960) by René Jodoin. Longpré made his directorial debut in 1964 with the animated short educational film Les restituteurs à bille de l'Antac . In his following short film Test 0558 he experimented with the possibilities of computer animation .

This was followed by numerous other animated films with a wide variety of animation techniques, which Longpré directed, including the pixilation film Monsieur Pointu , which was nominated in 1976 for an Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film. His last film was Félicité from 1989, which already made clear his turn to painting. Lonpré retired from the film business in 1989 and worked as a painter until his death in 2002.
