Monsieur Pointu is a 1975 Canadian animated short film directed by André Leduc and Bernard Longpré .
action
Hat, shoes, violin and violin bow appear by themselves on the black screen and play. A clown-like man arrives and wants to play the violin. Again and again, however, a shoe sneaks into his hand, the violin bow suddenly sags for a short time or the strings become longer. The violin also occasionally becomes independent and turns away from his cheek. The violinist makes the violin bow play the violin independently.
In the middle of the violinist's enthusiastic playing, the violin flies away and he tries to catch the playing instrument. His hat too now inflates irregularly on his head and collapses again. In quick succession, the violinist's headgear changes, who finally loses his violin again. He catches them. This is followed by scenes with the violinist's hat, who can initially be moved to the violin music, then circling the violinist and chasing the violin. Hat, violin and violin bow now change their size, the violin disintegrates into its individual parts, is put together by the man and opens and closes. Different violins appear, the violinist's violin becomes a bouquet of flowers, which the violinist captures with his hat. Soon the violinist disintegrates into individual parts, the clothes dance alone and in the end the violinist appears with a violin body and finally folds himself into a violin case. The box opens, the violinist climbs out and bows to the clapping audience.
production
Monsieur Pointu was created as a pixilation that Norman McLaren developed and first used for his short film Neighbors (1952). Here, real film recordings are made in a single frame, similar to stop-motion technology.
Monsieur Pointu was a stage character of the Québec violinist Paul Cormier, who can also be seen in the only role in the film and who contributed the score.
Awards
Monsieur Pointu was nominated in 1976 for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ", but could not prevail against Great .
