René Jodoin (born December 30, 1920 in Hull , Québec , † January 22, 2015 in Montreal ) was a Canadian film producer, director and animator . He founded the French-language animation division of the National Film Board of Canada .

Life

Jodoin studied at the École des beaux-arts in Montreal and was brought in 1943 by Norman McLaren as one of the first animators to the newly founded animation department of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). Jodoin was significantly influenced by his mentor McLaren and saw himself as a socially responsible artist. Many of his films therefore also have didactic features.

Jodoin experimented with new forms of animation and created He Who Laughs Last, the first film animated with Cels to be produced by the NFB. After a fruitful collaboration with McLaren, Jodoin left the NFB in 1947 and settled in Toronto as a freelance animator. Only in 1954 did he return to the NFB. He became head of the animation program there, which among other things turned films for the Canadian Department of National Defense .

In 1966, Jodoin founded the NFB's French-language animation department, which produced numerous eminent animators, including Ishu Patel , Co Hoedeman , Caroline Leaf and Paul Driessen . Jodoin promoted innovative and experimental approaches and worked as a director of short films with an educational mandate. His works of the time include the geometry-based short animated films Dance Squared (1961), Notes on a Triangle (1966) and Spheres (1969), the latter a collaboration with Norman McLaren that began in 1948.

From 1969, Jodoin experimented with computer-aided animation and in 1971 produced the first computer-animated short film Metadata , which was directed by Peter Foldes and with the help of the National Research Council of Canada . Two films produced by Foldes were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category: Hunger (1974) by Peter Foldes and Monsieur Pointu (1975) by André Leduc and Bernard Longpré . In 1977 Jodoin resigned from his post as director of the NFB's French-language animation department and retired in 1985. Even after 1985 he experimented in the field of computer animation. In 2001, Jodoin was awarded the Prix Albert-Tessier for his services to the Canadian animation film. He died on January 22, 2015 in Montreal at the age of 94.
