Bernardino Bonaparte Soares

Bernardino Bonaparte Soares († December 8, 1975 in Dili , East Timor ), fighting name Goinxet , was an East Timorese independence activist.

In the time after the Carnation Revolution in Portugal (1974/75) Bonaparte was a member of the left-wing FRETILIN and, like his sister Rosa Bonaparte , a member of the Central Committee (CCF) of the East Timorese party. Bernardino became head of the party's youth organization, OPJT (Organização Popular de Juventude Timorense). From the information department of FRETILIN, Bonaparte has been appointed contact, guide and translator for foreign journalists such as the Australian Jill Jolliffe . Bonaparte spoke English well.

On November 28, 1975 FRETILIN unilaterally proclaimed the independence of East Timor from the colonial power Portugal. On December 7th, Indonesian troops landed in Dili ( Operation Seroja ) and occupied the country. Bonaparte was last seen alive on December 8th at the Dili shipyard, where the Indonesians executed numerous people and threw the dead into the water. His sister Rosa is also one of the victims there.

Posthumously , Bonaparte was awarded the Ordem de Dom Boaventura in 2006.
