Bernardo Gianoncelli , called Bernardello († before 1650 probably in Venice ), was an Italian lutenist and composer of the Baroque .

life and work

Gianoncelli was one of the last Italian composers for the baroque lute . Almost nothing is known about his life. In 1650 his widow published a collection of his compositions entitled Il liuto di Bernardo Gianoncelli , a single copy of which has been preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice. The collection contains several suites for lutes arranged by key . They are among the last Italian contributions to the development of the suite as a closed musical form. Gianoncelli's compositions reveal a new style that combines improved counterpoint with homophonic melodies . He also experimented with new moods for the lute. His best-known work is a Bergamasca published by the musicologist Oscar Chilesotti in 1891. Ottorino Respighi created an orchestrated version of it, which he included in his 2nd suite of the Antiche danze ed arie .
