Bernardo Quaranta

Bernardo Quaranta, Baron von San Severino (born February 24, 1796 in Naples , † 1867 ) was an Italian archaeologist. He came from the Norman Quaranta family from Salerno.

Life

Quaranta dealt intensively with classical philosophy and archeology in his youth and was appointed professor of archeology and Greek literature at the University of Naples at the age of 20 . He made international contributions to the excavations of Pompeii . In addition, from 1833 he was the editor of the "Civil Annals of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies", which were the official organ for culture and science in southern Italy. He is considered the founder of the State Archives of Naples.

In 1840 he was elected a member of the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres . In addition to his scientific interests, he showed - like his son Francesco Saverio Quaranta later - a high level of commitment to social issues and health care. In 1854 he wrote a treatise on the fight against cholera .
