Bernd Niehaus Quesada

Bernd H. Niehaus Quesada (born April 11, 1941 ) is a Costa Rican international lawyer and diplomat.

Life

After leaving school in France , he completed his human rights studies at the René Cassin Institute. He completed his law studies at the Universidad de Costa Rica . He also studied economics and political science at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the University of Hamburg and the University of Cologne . He became active in the Corps Markomannia Bonn and in the Corps Irminsul . With a doctoral thesis in international law, he received his doctorate summa cum laude from the University of Strasbourg in 1995 .

From 2002 to July 2010, Niehaus was the ambassador of the Republic of Costa Rica to Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic. He was previously the Costa Rican Ambassador to the United Nations (1998–2002) and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Government of Costa Rica (1980–1982 and 1990–1994). In 1994 he was also a candidate for the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States. Niehaus is also professor of international law at the University of Costa Rica. He has been a member of the Costa Rica Bar Association since 1974 and of the International Law Commission since 2002 . He is fluent in Spanish, German, French and English.
