history

In 1873, the western Swiss technical center with the departments of architecture, electrical engineering, watchmaking school, arts and crafts school and mechanics and the teaching languages German and French were founded in Biel / Bienne . This technical center was financed exclusively by the city of Biel until 1892 and from then on by the canton of Bern and the city of Biel. The canton of Bern took over the sponsorship in 1910. In 1892, a cantonal technical center was also founded in Burgdorf . In 1952 a separate wood school was founded in Biel / Bienne. In 1997 the two schools merged and in 2003 they were combined with the architecture departments of the cities of Bern, Biel and Burgdorf (HTA) to form the Bern University of Applied Sciences for Architecture, Wood and Construction. As part of this reform, the architecture department was relocated to Burgdorf despite strong resistance from Biel.
