The chefs was a German-language cooking docu-soap from the TV station VOX . In it, two or three TV chefs coach restaurants that are suffering from poor quality and / or lack of guests and try to show the operators a new business perspective. At the beginning of 2015, the TV broadcaster VOX announced that no new episodes should be commissioned.

Structure of a program

Phase 1

Rehearsal dinner

At the beginning of each program, the restaurant is presented in a video, followed by a “rehearsal dinner” by the chefs. They usually vary in their orders between meat / fish dishes, starters and desserts.

Phase 2

Support in the kitchen, business examination

After getting an initial overview, the chefs get to know the regular kitchen routine on the first day and try to practice new structures, processes, dishes, etc. with the kitchen team on the second day. In addition, it is checked how well the business management of the company works. In most cases, this primarily includes reducing menus to extensive ones and making a commercial calculation of what is on offer.

Phase 3

Graduation dinner

At the end of each program, there is a special “new beginning” meal. Due to the popularity of the chefs, the restaurant is usually well attended here.

Phase 4

Another visit

In a final scene, the chefs return after five to six weeks to check whether the changes they have initiated are still being implemented or whether they have reverted to old structures. Another “rehearsal dinner” will also take place.

To the broadcast

The coaching format is similar to the RTL2 program Die Kochprofis . The appearing cooks were active as protagonists in this before the beginning of the production of the chefs , but left them after a dispute about the further development of the concept.

The first season consisted of 13 episodes and ran on Sundays from 7:05 p.m. After this season, in view of the low audience ratings, it was initially unclear whether further programs would be produced. The second season consisted of 25 episodes, ran on Sundays from 8:15 pm and ended on February 27, 2011. The third season ran until February 26, 2012. The fourth season started on November 11, 2012 and ended on March 10, 2013. Since October 20, 2013, the fifth season has been broadcast on Sundays at 7.15pm.

At the beginning of 2015, the TV broadcaster VOX announced that no new episodes should be commissioned. Most recently, the program only achieved a market share of around seven percent on its prominent slot.
