The Berneray Sound is a short waterway between the Scottish Hebrides North Uist in the south and Berneray to the north. It runs with a length of about four kilometers in an east-west direction and reaches a minimum width of about 400 m. In the waterway is the small island of Torogay . A silted up bay of the Berneray Sound on the south coast of Bernerays is Loch Borve .
For many years there was a ferry connection between the two islands. In 1997–1999, the Berneray Causeway, a road embankment was built over the Berneray Sound, making the ferry connection obsolete. This divides the Berneray Sound into two parts, so that it can no longer be completely crossed by ship.
