Bernhard Ludwig von Platen

Bernhard Ludwig von Platen (* around 1733; † August 20, 1774 in Jost ) was a Prussian officer and the first Volga German poet.

Life

Platen was born around 1733; According to different information in the sources either in the Kingdom of Hanover or in Pomerania .

In the Seven Years' War (until 1763) Bernhard Ludwig von Platen served as an officer in the Prussian Army. In 1766 he left the service.

He was recruited in Lübeck to emigrate to Russia. On the crossing he wrote the poem Travel description of the colonists as well as the way of life of the Russians .

His wish to also serve as an officer for Tsarina Katharina was not granted. He was initially settled as a farmer in the colony of Hussenbach (or Eustenbach, Russian initially Linjowo Osero, today Linjowo) founded on May 16, 1767 on the mountain side of the Volga. However, since he refused to work as a colonist, he became a village teacher. His existence as a colonist saddened him.
