Bernhard Simon (refugee)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard Simon (born July 30, 1945 in Neurode ; † October 28, 1963 near Lüchow ); was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

Bernhard Simon lived with his brother Siegfried with their divorced mother in Leipzig . Her father had long since left the GDR and lived in the Federal Republic. The brothers decided together to flee the GDR. One reason for the flight was the imminent draft of Siegfried Simons into the NVA . On October 28, 1963, they crossed the border with the Federal Republic of Germany northwest of Zießau . Bernhard Simon was seriously injured by a mine. With the help of his brother, he still overcame the barriers. His brother left him in the woods and sought help. Finally he met officials from the border customs service in the village of Wirl . The search for Bernhard Simon turned out to be difficult, however, as his brother was in shock and had difficulty orienting himself in the dark. Finally he was found. However, he died as a result of the high blood loss on the drive to the hospital, shortly before Lüchow.

At the place where the border was breached, a wooden cross commemorates Bernhard Simon.
