On January 24, 1575 Bernhard received after presentation by Caspar Gropper the commission on Dompräbende of the late Canon Raban von Hörde . However, this went to Bernhard von Westerholt of the same name . On December 21, 1575, Bernhard took possession of the Münster prebend of the cathedral scholaster Hermann von Diepenbrock. He was emancipated with the revolt to the Westerholt, Lembeck, Duvenvoorde and Renesse families in 1578. On December 2nd, 1581 he renounced in favor of his cousin Johann von Westerholt and then married Etta von der Kulen, who married Matthias von Westerholt after his death. From this marriage came the son Hermann Hektor (1586–1627). Because of his physical ailments, he was under the tutelage of his stepfather Johann von Westerholt († 1628) for a long time. Bernhard died in a tragic accident in 1592 and drowned in the Rhine.
