Life

Origin and family

Johann von Westerholt came from the Westphalian noble family von Westerholt , from which numerous well-known personalities emerged. He was the son of Colonel Hermann von Westerholt zu Lembeck (1516–1567) and his wife Johanna von Duvenvoorde. His brother Bernhard (1554–1592) was canon in Münster and, after 1581, lord of Westerholt.

Act

Johann studied in 1560 at the University of Bologna and in Padua . In 1562 he studied in Florence . Probably in 1575 he was prepared for a trial . In 1585 he went to Italy with his friend Bernhard von Oer . After their return to Germany in 1589, both were assaulted against the canon Johann Torck . When the Commander of the Teutonic Order Melchior von Senden reprimanded them for this, he was murdered by them. Because of this, Johann was imprisoned in Bevergern and later in Lingen. After his release he was forced by the cathedral chapter to give up his prebend. He complied and renounced on June 22, 1595 in favor of the turnar Bernhard von Westerholt and at the same time on the continuation of the process against the cathedral chapter. Johann was no longer allowed to enter the monastery. He married Isabella Snab. The son Bernhard (approx. 1600–1639) came from the marriage. He became Herr zu Wilbring through marriage and inherited the Westerholter property after the death of his cousin Hermann Hektor von Westerholt.
