Bernhelm Booß-Bavnbek , also Booss-Bavnbek, formerly Bernhelm Booß, (* 1941 , Essen ) is a German mathematician who is particularly concerned with global analysis . He is professor emeritus at Roskilde University in Denmark .

Booß received his doctorate in 1971 under Friedrich Hirzebruch at the University of Bonn ( elliptical topology of transmission problems ).

He researched and published on geometric aspects of partial differential equations and in particular on applications of the index sets of elliptic differential operators ( Atiyah-Singer index theorem ). Further areas of work were mathematical modeling in the natural sciences and especially its application in theoretical physics ( gauge theories , quantum gravity ) and biology. Booß-Bavnbek was the chief editor of a large monograph on the mathematical modeling of biological systems using the example of the regulation of exocytosis in pancreatic β-cells .

In addition, Booß-Bavnbek also dealt with questions of mathematical-military research from the perspective of peace research and was involved in the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES) .

Politically, Booß-Bavnbek was initially involved in the Democratic Progress Campaign , for which he ran unsuccessfully on the North Rhine-Westphalian state list in the 1969 federal election, and later in the DKP . This led to a professional ban for him in the FRG, so that he emigrated to Denmark .
