Bernice Weldon Sargent
Bernice Weldon Sargent FRSC (born September 24, 1906 in Williamsburg , Ontario , † December 17, 1993 in Kingston , Ontario, Canada) was a Canadian physicist and pioneer of atomic physics. He was a member of the Royal Society of Canada
Education
Sargent graduated from Queen's University in 1926 with a master's degree. He studied from 1928 to 1930 at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University , where he was a student of Ernest Rutherford .
Research and Teaching
Among other things, he researched radioactive beta decay in Cambridge . The Sargent rule named after him provides a relationship between the maximum energy released during beta decay and the mean life. He then returned to Queen's University as a lecturer. In 1940 and 1941 Sargent was involved with George Laurence in building a research reactor at the National Research Council in Ottawa. Sargent then worked as the physics department head at Chalk River Laboratories . He returned to Queen's University in 1951 as head of the Physics Department. He officially retired in 1972, but continued research until 1990.
Awards
Sargent received the CAP medal for his life's work from the Canadian Association of Physicists in 1959, he was a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
