The Bernische Kunstgesellschaft (BKG) is an art association in Bern . It was founded in 1813, making it one of the oldest art associations in German-speaking countries.

history

On February 22nd, 1813, the Bernische Künstlergesellschaft, as it was then called, was founded on the initiative of Sigmund von Wagner and Johann Rudolf Wyss , professor of philosophy. The majority of the 18 founding members were artists, for example Franz Niklaus König , Simon Daniel Lafond , Heinrich Rieter and Valentin Sonnenschein .

From 1818 to 1854 the BKG organized exhibitions. Since the cantonal art association took over this task from 1854, the BKG turned to other fields of activity and began to buy works of art. She acquired works by Ferdinand Hodler , Cuno Amiet , Giovanni Giacometti and others. Ultimately, the BKG played a key role in founding the Kunstmuseum Bern , which opened its doors in 1879. The BKG was also committed to founding the art school in 1871 and the Kunsthalle Bern in 1918.
