Bert Brandsma

Albertus "Bert" Brandsma (born October 20, 1965 ) is a Dutch clarinetist and saxophonist who has emerged in both classical and jazz .

Live and act

At the age of 14, Brandsma was strongly influenced by a concert by Chris Barber . He began studying clarinet at the Groningen Conservatory , and soon afterwards began studying classical saxophone with Jan Schoemaker (graduated in 1991) and jazz saxophone with Henny Kluvers (graduated in 1992). Since then he has been a professional musician. In 1994 he won first prizes in music competitions at Leiden Jazz with his newly formed band Dixieland Crackerjacks , with whom he toured in succession through Portugal, Poland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland and the United States and released several albums, and at the Breda Jazz Festival with the Fluitekruidt .

Brandsma was director of the Dutch Palladium Orchestra and a member of the saxophone quartet Les Boréades . He also belonged (as a civilian) to the Koninklijke Militaire Kapel "Johan Willem Friso" and to Bernard Berkhout and his Swing Orchestra. Since 2003 he has been playing the bass saxophone in the jazz trio of trombonist Selena Kuiper, with whom he has been married since 2004.

In addition to these activities as a jazz musician, Brandsma worked with several larger ensembles such as the Metropole Orkest , the Noord Nederlands Orkest , the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra , the Duisburg Philharmonic and the Bergische Symphoniker . He played more than 260 performances at the Cologne Opera as a saxophonist. He is also known on the clarinet as a specialist in Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue .

In 2011 Brandsma joined Chris Barber's band, to which he has been a permanent member since 2012. Since Barber retired, he has been moderating the band.
