Berthold (Ebrach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berthold († after 1262) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1252 until his resignation in 1262 .

Life

Berthold was born in the second half of the 12th or first half of the 13th century. The sources are silent about the place of origin of the future abbot, and Berthold's family and any siblings are not mentioned. The young Berthold rose quickly within the monastery hierarchy and was elected abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach after the resignation of his predecessor Heinrich I.

After it was first mentioned in 1252, it took two years before Berthold reappeared in the sources. In 1260 his convent was granted some rights by the Bishop of Bamberg, Berthold von Leiningen . A year later, in 1261, the monastery received further privileges. This time it was approved by Pope Alexander IV . Abbot Berthold resigned to the abbey in 1262 and died in an unknown year.
